In many places, we're told to "leave our emotions out of it," at work, and in our technical endeavors, including in open source communities. But that's an irrational, dangerously naïve thing to try; we are complex beings, with rich lives apart from our technical skills. Acknowledging that commonality, and the struggles of life we all go through, lets us handle our emotions swiftly and move on to more productive things.
In this talk, Ruth will discuss the value of empathy in our work and personal lives, and the ways that groups of people can communicate their collective empathy to participants and those outside the community.
